A Mother F***er of A Mother’s Day

The name “Spirit Uncensored” was born out of the Centers for Spiritual Living’s NextGEN retreat. Of course this year’s event was cancelled, but at a typical retreat, a variety of four-letter words are easily weaved into prayer. These uncensored prayers come with resounding celebration, but not because of the meaning of these four-letter words themselves. We celebrate our uncensored prayers because they’re authentic. We all know that we regularly use these words. But because of tradition, they feel forbidden in spiritual contexts.

Authenticity is my jam. So the spiritual center I created has to be a space where every person, and every word, feels welcome. When we first started Spirit Uncensored, we described our monthly events as “Fierce AF”. We were dipping a toe into the pool of uncensored language. Immediately, we faced backlash. Some people said we were trying too hard to be too cool for school. Others were excited.

Our decision to remain uncensored has continued to be controversial to some and exciting to others. After serving as the center’s spiritual leader since it’s inception, I fully understand that I can never please everyone. I understand that controversy always comes with the territory of creating spaces that are radically-inclusive.

I can assure you all, I never use uncensored language to shock or get attention. It always comes from an authentic place for me, and I rarely use four-letter words. When we referenced Jen Sincero’s books, “You Are A Badass” and “You Are A Bad Ass at Making Money” in our monthly events, those were usually the only curse words I ever used. Regardless of where you stand on the fence of controversy, I invite you to watch our event for yourself, on Mothers Day, 5/10 at 4:30p PT on the Spirit.Uncensored Instagram Live page.
